My skin cracks and tears under the heat of their criticisms. My throat tightens. I exhale and escape, if only for a moment. The sting of their slander dulls. My gaze turns toward the future. I slip on a veil of confidence and lift my head. My eyes sharpen. The future calls to me, wide and open.
