Under the watchful gaze of a garden of bronze statues, curious passers-by venture closer, attracted by our laughter. A pistachio cake takes place of pride in the centre of our blanket… What bliss! I contemplate Catherine. Years later, her gaze remains etched on my memories of that time and place — of the centre of the country, with its horizonless lakes and fossil-encrusted buildings — where I built myself, where I found my voice. Sometimes, I think I’m still there — in heart, anyway.
